Sunrise Over Subilimayo

Six-part flute choir [three alto flutes, two bass flutes, contrabass flute] (2025)

Subilimayo (lat. 26°51’0″ N, long. 108°27’0″ W) is a village in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. Due to an unexplained astronomical anomaly, the sun rises there every day except on February 25. Thus, when dawn breaks on February 26, a celebration is held to express gratitude to both the sun’s return and to Mācuīlxōchit, the Nahuatl god of gambling and music. The attentive listener might hear Sunrise Over Subilimayo on that day, though, for all intents and purposes, the piece is appropriate for any day.
